The understory rises from the ground to the canopy level at about 60 feet. It is made up of smaller trees and shrubs. Little sunlight filters through the canopy so humidity is high, temperatures are constant and there is little wind. If a light gap occurs in the canopy, some tree seedlings will quickly sprint upwards reaching for the light.
Animals of this layer include: the slow loris, lizards, leopards and sloths.
